Part B
Overview
Take a look at the question before determining your essay type. There are two main types of essays. A narrative (story) or an argumentative essay. I wouldn’t recommend a narrative unless you excel at English.

Repeating again, you do NOT need complex vocabulary, idioms and phrases like “This is the tip of the iceberg”, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”
What you need is
  • You NEED variety in your paragraphs
  • You NEED different sentence structures
  • You NEED a clear, logical and fluent way of expressing yourself.
The English essay is not a test of the amount of vocabulary you know, but instead a test of expressing yourself in a clear way.
Same as Part A, try to put yourself in the shoes of the markers. Try to think about what they will like, and try to align you point and views with theirs.
With an argumentative essay, there is a certain format that you should stick with
  • First paragraph: Introduction
  • Second paragraph: First point
  • Third paragraph: Second point
  • Fourth paragraph: Rebuttal to bring out your third point
  • Final paragraph: Conclusion

Analysis by Question
Question 2
Letter to the editor, 3 reasons if school should allow the public to use school sport facilities after school time
Analysis
In a letter to the editor, the format is very important. You start off with“Dear Editor “and you end with “yours faithfully”. You have to align all the headings and endings to the left hand side of the paper.
In this topic, the requirement is 1 sided 3 reasons, but the rebuttal should still be added in. The rebuttal is a way of bring out your third stance instead of an opposing view.
Students have to be careful of over exaggerating the impacts of their ideas.
Suggested View: Affirmative
  • The government has always been encouraging citizens to do more sports, however there are limited venues. Opening up school sports facilities would allow provide more options to the citizens.
  • The government would be utilizing resources more efficiently if they opened up more sports facilities instead of building new ones. Suggest examples from Taiwan in which such plans have been implemented.
  • (Rebuttal) Some may argue that opening up the venue would have potential safety issues for the users. Rebut by saying that other government venues would carry equal risk. Suggest that the government can put up guidelines on how to use the equipment and stretch properly.

Question 3
Article for school magazines: fresh graduates are failing to have employment opportunities, there's a claim that these people should look for job opportunities in other cities in Asia
Analysis
This is an article for the school magazine, so your audience would be mainly students. You should focus on how a job opportunity in other cities would affect them.
For writing an article, it would always be nice to put in the title of the article as it gives a brief idea to the readers about what they are going to read.
Suggested View: Affirmative
  • With a job opportunity elsewhere, it would provide more exposure to students. Different countries have different working styles, working elsewhere could equip them better for future job opportunities.
  • They would have the opportunity to live in another country. Experience the local culture.
  • Some say that it would be hard to adapt to a new environment, there would be no friends. Rebut by saying it is a great experience to step out of one’s comfort zone
Negative
  • To find a job elsewhere has an expensive cost. One needs to buy or rent an apartment in a foreign country. One doesn’t receive any government benefits, the cost of living may also be higher.
  • Unstable foreign policy. Need to suggest examples. Both Saudi Arabia and the European Union are considering policies that protect local workers as a priority. (Saudi Arabia is going to create a green card system like the USA.)
  • Some may say that it will provide more exposure. Argue that exposure can be obtained via working with different people as well.

Question 4
Analysis
Letter to young post, recently parents in Asia are installing apps to monitor the use of children phones, state whether you agree or not.
This would be one of the more popular topics.
This is a letter to a newspaper, so you should start your essay with“Dear editorial board” or “To whom it may concern” and you would end with “yours faithfully”
However, most people would be agreeing to it. So, in order to stand out, I would suggest writing from a negative view.
Even though you are writing from a negative view, it is important to say that parents do it out of love and compassion for their children. Why? Because most markers are parents.
Suggested View: Negative
  • State that it is an intrusion of privacy and emphasize that communication between parent and child is more important
  • State that it could create further conflicts between parents and children, as the children would lose trust in their parents as well.
  • State that parents do it out of love and compassion for their children only, such as preventing them from knowing bad people. Suggest that there are alternatives to monitoring.

Question 5
Analysis
Local street culture is fading. Write on one aspect ofthe fading local culture and what is worthy of keeping.
This is a rather tricky question, as it is similar to aliberal studies question. Many candidates would fall into the trap of answeringit like a LS question.
It IS acceptable to use ideas from LS, but it IS NOT towrite like you are doing LS.
There can be many aspects to write from, such aseconomical or social. However I think writing from a cultural aspect would bebetter.
An important note is that you have to define what isstreet culture first, and which part of it is worthy of keeping
Suggested Outline:

  • State     that street culture refers to the hawkers that sell food or merchandise on     the street and street performers, such as the ones we see in Mong Kok.
  • State     that local street culture is a cultural heritage unique in Hong Kong. They     attract tourists.
  • State     that local street culture is a collective memory in Hong Kong, it promotes     the sense of belonging. Provide stories of how people would go out during     Chinese New Year and buy food to eat on the streets.
  • Say     that street culture are often unlicensed vendors and are against the law.     Emphasize that is exactly what the government should be working on. The     government should be trying to preserve the unique street culture, but     instead they are destroying it by implementing numerous rules and     regulations.
  • Conclude     that street culture is worth preserving.

Question 6
Analysis
Write a short story with the theme “revenge is sweet”
This question is the only one that requires you to write a short story. This should be the least chosen question. A short story requires extensive vocabulary to describe various situations and make the story lively.
For a short story, it is acceptable to throw in large amounts of vocabulary. However, it is essential that all the vocabulary are used in the right context.
The quality of the story highly depends on the plot.
There are no limitations as to where the story takes place. Most students think that the setting is restraint to Hong Kong, and the main characters have to be students. That you not the case. In order to impress the markers, you should think out of the box. The story could have a setting of a magical world! Your main character could be a talking cat, a dragon or even one of the villains. Just try to be creative and let the markers enjoy the story.
The most important part of the story would be the morale incorporated within. You have to deliver a POSITIVE message or a valuable lesson through your stories.
One last thing, please don't write love stories. You will fail your exam if you do so.
Suggested thoughts
There is no certain format nor order to write a story, but I usually suggest starting to think from the moral you want to bring out. Remember the moral has to be positive. Below are are a few suggestions
  • “Revenge is sweet, but forgiveness is sweeter”
  • “Revenge is sweet, but it leads to nowhere”
  • “Revenge is sweet, but that makes you no different from those who have hurt you”
After you have a moral, then you can proceed to think about the setting
  • It could be in a magical world
  • It could be in the ancient times
  • It could be in the future world
After all that, you can start to think about the plot and write your story.

Question 7
Write a proposal to suggest one or two trends popular with young people.
Analysis
Writing a proposal requires a formal tone alongside your arguments. Remember to be polite and not too aggressive when you justify your way of presentation.
For popular trends, you can think about it from your own experience. There is no model answer, just think about what’s happening around you and your friends. What’s the most popular at the moment and that would be your answer.
Suggested Outline
  • Greet the organizers and do a brief self introduction, stating why you are writing the proposal. “To whom it my concern/ To the youth festival organizing committee, My name is Chris and I am a secondary 6 student. I understand that there will be an upcoming youth festival to showcase popular youth cultures. I am very excited about it and I have a few suggestions of my own for your consideration.”
  • Then you can state the popular trends in Hong Kong and give an introduction about them. A few suggestions would be
    • Youtubers
    • Cheap travelling to other countries
    • Foodies (People who search around Hong Kong for good food)

  • Then after stating the popular trends, you would need to talk about how you would present them. A few suggestions would be
    • Inviting several Youtubers to come to the festival and perform or just have a talk show with the audience
    • Set up booths and put detailed information for different countries and the sightseeing spots or places worth going there
    • Invite some restaurants to come over to the festival and set up some tasting events. (You can give an example of the Taste of Hong Kong, which is a similar event that was held recently)

  • After the suggestions, you would have to justify your ideas by talking about
    • The feasibility
    • The cost
    • The attractiveness

  • After that it would be essential to make a small conclusion “The above are my suggestions for the festival. Thank you for your consideration. I hope the event will be a great success!”

Question 8
How important is it for us to acknowledge the challengewe face and find ways to cope with them? Explain your opinion with yourpersonal experience.
Analysis
This is another rarely chosen topic.
The title makes it look hard, however it is just anotherstraightforward argumentative essay.
However, it is clearly stated that personal experiencesshould be used, so do not use examples of other people. You can just make upstories to satisfy your need. It would be nice if you made up stories on howteachers helped you.
Suggested Outline

  • Give     an introduction about what people usually think of fear. It would be nice     to quote the original sentence.
  • State     that if we do not face our own fears, we would not be able to improve. You     could talk about how you used to fear speaking in front of an audience.     However, after your teacher persuaded you to speak during the assembly,     you started to become more confident. It brought a positive change to you
  • State     that overcoming fear gives great satisfaction. You could talk about how     you used to be afraid of math. You thought that it was tedious and     useless. However, you met your math teacher, who provided guidance and     cared for you immensely. Your math teacher taught you to appreciate the     beauty of math. Afterwards you fell in love with math and started to     understand how it actually helps in our daily life.
  • Give a     conclusion on the topic and urge people to overcome their fears as well.

Question 9
You want to study performing art but your parents wouldlike you to pursue an academic subject. Write an email to convince your parentswho are now on an oversea trip since the deadline for application isapproaching.
Analysis
This would be a rather popular topic as students may havesimilar experiences themselves.
However, you have to be careful of your tone. You arewriting an email to your parents and you would have to be very polite. It isalso essential that you do not become too radical, in the sense of saying yourparents do not understand you or they are always restricting your choices.
Again the main point is to say that you understand yourparents really care about your future, and you appreciate their suggestions. They have been helping you make the best decisions for the past 18 years. However, you think now is the time to make a decision of your own and pursueyour own dreams.
Remember do not say anything bad about your parents.
Suggested outline

  • A     brief introduction on why you are writing the email. You should state why     you decided to write an email instead of talking with them face to face.     DO NOT say that if you talk face to face, your parents will always end up     screaming at you. Instead, you SHOULD say, whenever you talk face to face,     you often lose your temper and say mean things at them. You do not want to     upset them.
  • State     that acting is your favorite thing to do and that it is what you are best     at. State that it has always been your dream and that you do want to     enroll in the Academy of Performing arts greatly.
  • State     that you will be much more interested and hardworking if you chose a     subject that you like, as it gives you meaning, and it makes you feel     alive.
  • State     that you can always pursue another academic degree after you become an     actor. But it would be much harder the other way round. You have to state     that you do not want any regrets when you grow up and tell your parents     that you have given the idea serious consideration.
  • Give a     brief conclusion saying that you are thankful for the care and compassion     your parents have given you. However, it is time for you to make a     decision of your own. You would like to walk a path of your own, a path     that would leave you with no regrets.
